Classifications of Car Accidents
- Head-on Collisions – Head-on collisions cause massive damages, and involve vehicular forces which often lead to serious injury and death. Head-on collisions may occur on narrow two-lane highways with no separation between two opposing lanes of traffic. Rural highways and roads are usually just too narrow, and head-on collisions occur during pass attempts, where a passing vehicle travels in the opposition lane of travel — often at night. - Vehicle Rollovers – Generally, these collisions are caused by vehicles making sharp turns at high speeds, or make sudden evasive maneuvers to avoid an accident (which, in turn, cause an accident when the vehicle rolls over). While all cars can roll over, passenger trucks and sport utility vehicles are at a greater risk because of a high center of gravity.
- “T-Bone” collisions – These types of accidents generally occur when drivers are making unprotected left and right turns. Vehicle damage and driver injury are typically more severe in these types of injuries.
- Rear-End Collisions – Rear-end collisions comprised 34% of all wrecks in Oregon in 2018. Personal Injury Protection Benefits
Personal Injury Protection (“PIP”) insurance is included on automobile policies. It provides payments for certain medical bills, household services, and funeral expenses.
Your own automobile insurance company will pay your PIP benefits. Each PIP policy must provide at least $15,000.00 of coverage per person injured in an accident, which can be used to pay medical expenses. You can choose to purchase a policy with higher limits, sometimes up to $100,000 per person.
No matter who is at fault for a wreck, PIP pays for your injuries.
PIP covers reasonable and necessary medical expenses related to your accident. This can include doctor bills, chiropractor bills, physical therapy, prescriptions, and even acupuncture. PIP must cover $15,000.00 of medical expenses within a year of the crash.
PIP covers lost wages.
PIP also covers 70% of any wages lost due to an injury in a car accident, up to a maximum of $3,000.00 per month. Benefits aren’t triggered until you have missed 14 consecutive days of work, and can last for 52 weeks. You will need a letter from a physician stating setting forth your disability and injuries; and you’ll need a note from your employer verifying your employment and your wage information.
